Arnold Design Group is a small, family-owned and operated firm with several decades of experience.
Arnold Design Group specializes in shingle-style residential design and over the years, we have designed over 800 residential projects ranging in size from small additions to 8,000-square-foot new homes.
We have dozens of area projects at any given time and the vast majority of our work comes to us through referrals from past clients and word of mouth.
Many of our designs are located in the coastal communities of Watch Hill, Weekapaug and Quonochontaug. Other projects are located along the shoreline of Southern Rhode Island and in the Stonington and Mystic, Connecticut areas.
The Arnold Design Group has been practicing residential design for over 40 years. The firm began as a part-time business in 1963 and due to its success the firm became a full-time operation in 1984. To the present the business has grown in volume and in reputation among southern New England’s coastal communities.
Expertise
Our expertise is in Shingle Style design. In addition, we have incorporated Craftsman style details into many of our projects. We also have extensive experience in many traditional American styles including, Classic Revival, Colonial, Federal, and Victorian to name a few. In all cases we believe that a structure’s general style of the design should be appropriate and relate to its neighborhood and location.
Experience
With over 65 years in combined professional experience the Arnold Design Group has developed a reputation in the area as being the pinnacle of traditional residential design. Our clientele is generated almost entirely by referrals and is a testament to our standing among the community. Having practiced for many years, in this area, we have an acute understanding of the architectural vernacular of southern New England’s coastal communities.

Herb L. Arnold Jr., ABID is the principal and founder of Arnold Design Group. Herb worked as a Professor at Three Rivers College and started the Architecture Program in the Department of Architectural Design and Civil Engineering. He became Head of the Department in 1982 and complemented his time in education with his work at Arnold Design. After thirty years at Three Rivers College, Herb retired from academia with the status of Professor Emeritus. Herb’s engineering background in professional and educational practice is the cornerstone of the structural expertise of Arnold Design Group.
Michael R. Arnold, AIBD, Assoc. AIA, joined Herb in 1986. Prior to joining the firm, Michael earned an undergraduate and an architectural degree. Mike has created an architectural style that is attractive, appropriate and traditional in content. Many of the projects at Arnold Design Group are in high profile locations including Watch Hill, Weekapaug, and Quonochontaug, and our coastal designs are well-known and highly sought after.
Harvey C. DeMovick III, ABID, Assoc. AIA, joined the firm in 2002 and serves as design and marketing consultant. Before joining the firm, Harvey completed a masters degree in architecture & planning and worked for corporate interior design firms in Washington, D.C.
